An edition is an authentic artwork created from a unique piece of work by an artist. Editions are created in multiple numbers, carefully chosen by the artist and no more can be created after all editions have been created and sold. The value of the original work will exceed that of an edition. The concept of a “limited edition” is vital for collectors to distinguish an authentic print from a reproduction. It is generally recognized that the smaller the edition, the more valuable the print. So as well as authenticating prints with their signature, artists will number their editions, usually in pencil, in the margins. However, in the case that a print is not signed, nor numbered it must be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Each is noted as a fraction of the agreed print run, providing collectors with a guarantee of the work’s authenticity.
