I'm Sorry For Being Awful (2018) is one of four limited edition artworks created in 2018 that was added for public view at Sketch, London, forming part of his solo exhibition featuring 91 vibrant and unique pieces. Shrigley was given the walls of London restaurant Sketch a fresh coat of satire with an exhibition of 91 new works. This new set replaced his previous installation of 239 black-and-white drawings, which had adorned the walls of The Gallery – a section of the restaurant – since its opening in 2014. Compared to the earlier collection, the new works were far more vivid, featuring a palette of pink, red, black and white that complemented the restaurant’s famously Instagrammable pink interior.
Shrigley's unmistakable drawing style, infused with dry wit, cuts straight to the core of human behaviour, offering satirical takes on everyday life and social interaction. His work often revisits recurring motifs—capturing the world through a child-like lens, imagining the viewpoints of aliens or monsters, or portraying the quirky impulses of a loud eavesdropper. With intentionally crude illustrations and his trademark scrawled handwriting, Shrigley holds up a sardonic mirror to society, producing moments of unexpected insight.
“ Following the fantastic reception The Gallery has received over the past three years, I’m really excited to continue the collaboration with Sketch and India Mahdavi with a series of new colourful works. With dreary news often filling our headlines, I hope that diners will enjoy my take on the banality of everyday life. „
