The Portraits | Haring, Goldberg, Smith, Byrne Set-Annie Leibovitz-1

Keith Haring

Leibovitz’s portrait of Keith Haring is one of her most iconic shots that made the artist auction record in 2016. The photograph is proof of one of Leibovitz central themes: subtle but artistically rendered nudity. The edition represents this historic original shot from 1986.

Whoopi Goldberg

The Whoopi Goldberg portrait is based on a character featured in Whoopi's solo performance that took place in a small downtown club in New York in 1984. The character, a young African-American girl, attempts to appear white by immersing herself in Clorox.

Patti Smith

In 1978, Annie Leibovitz followed Patti Smith and her band on the road for a cover story in Rolling Stone magazine. Patti Smith's second album had just been released, featuring the successful single Because the Night, which made it to the Top Twenty charts

David Byrne

The photograph portrays David Byrne in his “Ivy Jacket with Wood Slacks”, designed for the movie “True Stories”, written and directed by him. The film offered an eccentric perspective on life in a small rural town in Texas, where the 150th anniversary of independence from Mexico is celebrated.

Years before it ever occurred to me that one could have a life as a photographer, I had become accustomed to looking at the world through a frame.
