Obsidian I-Ai Weiwei-1

The prints Obsidian I (2021) and Obsidian II (2021) embody the dual aspects of a monumental, jet-black Murano glass chandelier. Created using an innovative printing technique that integrates black-pigmented ink, these works achieve what we believe to be the deepest, most intense black ever realized in the studio.

Rich in depth and dimensionality, the finished prints possess a striking three-dimensional quality. Their scale allows for the capture of even the most intricate details with unparalleled precision. The titles, Obsidian I and Obsidian II, evoke both the physical and metaphysical ties between these prints and the Earth's darkest natural substance — obsidian lava. In ancient times, the Maya fashioned obsidian into flat scrying mirrors, using them to gaze into the underworld. Obsidian is revered for its protective qualities, believed to form a shield against negativity and act as a grounding force, tethering the base of the spine to the Earth's core. It is also thought to facilitate a connection with past lives, helping to heal lingering traumas and unresolved emotions, bringing clarity and depth to one's inner world.
