Friedrich Kunath
Working predominantly in painting, but also with sculpture, installation and film, Kunath's practice is characterized by juxtapositions: landscapes and still lives recall 19th century Romanticism and Northern painting, while cartoon characters, 90s song lyrics and tropical sunsets refer to contemporary popular culture. His work layers a poetic, melancholy imagery with poignant phrases, and embraces comedy and pathos, evoking universal feelings of love, hope, longing, and despair.
“ I feel that it’s the very engine of my work, this longing for a place that doesn’t exist - it’s an empty promise. „
